40K - 382nd Tallarn (Desert Raider) Regiment

November 2022 Update - with the iminent release of the 9th Edition Codex, it seems this force will require a bit of a re-org... stay tuned as I update, re-org (and rebase!) the force and make some decisions about future painting plans - and post up-to-date Pictures!

Here is my collection of Tallarn Desert Raiders for Warhammer 40,000 – or at least the ones I have painted so far!

The forces below represent elements of 382nd Tallarn (Desert Raider) Regiment as they were on deployment to Xoxigar Secondus. The 382nd Tallarn (Desert Raider) Regiment is a nominally Mechanized Infantry force. Unfortunately many of the Regiment's Chimera Armoured Transport vehicles were lost with one of the transport ships that never made it.

This force works in close conjunction with the 451st Tallarn Tank Regiment and the 17th Super Heavy Regiment. Currently there are pictures of elements of those units below... but at some point they may be moved to a page of their own.

The entire force so far (well... a while ago...)! Currently this force amounts to a light company – with a few attached elements

(Note: Because the way units are organized now, If I were to actually play a game with these guys, he would be fielded as the Company Commander  because you need some Headquarters Units for each formation and Platoon Commanders are NOT Headquarters… they’re “Elites”… as are Command Squads… So, as a Platoon Commander and his Command Squad, they would eat up TWO Elite slots in whatever formation I put them in…)

Other Company/Regimental Elements

These represent elements attached from within the regiment either at the company level (that don't fit into the regular infantry platoons) or regimental level.

Veteran Squad – commanded by Sergeant Major Murad – I’m not sure where the Veteran Squad will fit in to the Org Charts, but I have one… I originally painted them up mostly to use as a Kill Team in Shadow War: Armageddon and continued as such in the newer versions of Kill Team.

I should probably assign these Special Weapon Squads to individual Platoons at some point...

I'm not sure if the Heavy Weapon Squads below should be attached to individual Platoons, or if they should be organized as a Support/Weapons Platoon within the company, or from a Support/Heavy Weapon Company within the Regiment...

13th -15th (Reserve) Squadrons

The three reserve squadrons are administrative units only. They are made up of those most recently recruited before deployment. Commanded by a Lieutenant, each Reserve Squadron has ten unnamed/unnumbered tanks each with a full compliment of crew commanded by an "Acting Sergeant" (Still just a private, but acting as Tank Commander). Positions within each tank crew are changed regularly so all can learn something about each position and find which each recruit excels at.

When losses taken in "Fighting Squadrons" tanks and/or personnel are moved up as replacements.

17th Tallarn Super Heavy Tank Regiment

The 17th Tallarn Super Heavy Tank Regiment includes one Baneblade Command Tank and three Squadrons of three Super Heavy Tanks:

Game Organization

(This section is outdated and needs to be reorganized. I believe this was for 8th edition!? Probaly wait until the 9th edition Codex is out and re-figure everything out...)

So far, that’s about Power Level 142 or 2666 points. I can now field a "Brigade" Detachment (+12 Command Points - according to the latest FAQ - for a total of 15!) I'd currently need to field the Roughriders as two squads of five - though I still wouldn't be able to field ALL of the Elite options. The Shadowsword would be fielded as a separate Super Heavy Auxiliary Detachment. Pretty soon I'd be able to field most of the armour as a completely separate "Spearhead" detachment.

Brigade Detachment

HQ (3-5)
3x Company Commander
Lord Commissar
1x Tank Commander

Troops (6-12)
6x Infantry Squad

Elites (3-8)
3x Command Squad
Veteran Squad
5x Special Weapon Squad (2x Sniper, 2x Melta, 1x Plasma)
Commissar

Fast Attack (3-5)
Scout Sentinel
2x Roughriders

Heavy Support (3-5)
2x Heavy Weapon Squads (Mortars)
1x Leman Russ Tank Squad (with 2 tanks)
1x Lema Russ Demolisher

Super Heavy Auxilliary Detachment

1x Shadowsword

Still To Do

Still to paint I have:

1x Company Commanders
3x Platoon Commanders (Which will probably be fielded as MORE Company Commanders…)
9x Infantry Squads
3x Command Squads
1x Special Weapon Squads (Plasma)
2x Roughrider Squads
2x Scout Sentinels
9x Heavy Weapon Squads (2x Mortar, 3x Lascannon, 3x Auto Cannon, 2x Heavy Bolter)
2x Leman Russ tanks

I also have an old Armorcast Warhound Titan to paint up. It won't be specifically Tallarn - but could be attached...

Still To Get....?

Really...? Do I NEED to add anything to this force!?  Maybe another Super Heavy (or two!? a Baneblade and a Storm Lord) – once EVERYTHING ELSE is DONE!

Battle Honours

These forces have seen action in the following battles....

Also the veteran squad saw action as Sgt. Kassab's squad of 2nd platoon, 5th company 415th Tallarn Infantry Regiment - a Kill Team I used in various Shadow War: Armageddon games I was playing in February of 2018:

Shadow War: The Raid - Kassab's Team saw action against the enigmatic Harlequins!

Shadow War: Armageddon Again - Kassab's Team faced another Xenos threat: the T'au!

  1. You should update the squad write-up that contains Aziz the unphotogenic.

    1. Perhaps...

Or perhaps we'll have to replace the photo and erase his name from history so that others will never know of his Heresy and thus not be tempted to follow the same path...

  2. That's a good start for the painted army, looks like you got a lot to finish for 2018

    1. Thanks Jonny!

I DO have a lot to paint. but I'm feeling pretty excited about the project, so hopefully I'll be able to stay on target long enough to get most of it done. I've planned in some additional stuff for this year (some of the Eldar and finishing up the ECW project) - hopefully taking a break and working on those from time to time will keep me from burning out on the Astra Militarum...
